Située dans la ville du même nom (province de Gangwon-do), la gare de Gangneung est le terminus de la ligne Yeongdong. Elle est d’ailleurs précédée par la gare de Anin. En service en tant que simple gare depuis le 6 novembre 1962, elle fait partie de la ligne Yeongdong depuis 1979, date où la gare de Gyeongpodae fut supprimée.
